Cherry Island is somewhat unique in that it is one of very few private islands situated in the middle of sapphire blue and crystal clear head waters of the Waikato River. For generations Cherry Island operated as a private zoo which fell into disrepair. Graham Crust developed this concept whilst at Beca. The vision of the new owner is to regenerate the islands landscape and incorporate 45 individual private “hideaways’ as part of a boutique lodge hotel. Situated in an outstanding landscape management area the visual impact of the lodge buildings will be minimised and the architecture will be intentionally recessive, with each ‘hideaway” having individual and private view of the Waikato river passing by.
