Graham Applin was recruited from UK to act as Project and Design director on the $1 billion development (1994) of the largest retail project in Asia at that time.
The project team included Arup as engineers. It involved ‘top-down’ construction of 7 basements and construction over a working MTR tunnel. It included the integration of the MCRC over ground railway station and the major bus terminus for Kowloon. The pre-concept was supplied by Arquitectonica and Graham worked with Bernardo Font Brescica to realise the highly original design. The centre featured an Olympic ice rink and was inspired by organic rock and crystal geometries which were highly irregular. The centre opened in 1996 and never having needed refurbishment, remains one of Asia most distinctive, premier retail centres.
